New Year...New You?

Now that the dust has settled from the New Year’s celebrations, it is a good time to think about the resolutions we may have made for the coming year. How do you feel about New Year’s Resolutions? Do you find them inspiring and a way of keeping yourself motivated for the year ahead? Or perhaps they feel like an unwelcome burden. Maybe you have already broken some or all of your resolutions, and are feeling disappointed and deflated as a result.

Setting goals can be a great way to focus on the targets we would like to achieve, but we need to be careful to avoid setting ourselves up for failure. Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your goals for the year ahead:

  • Keep them manageable – if you have a big goal for this year, like getting fit or losing weight, try to break it down into manageable steps and keep them specific. For example, rather than saying “I want to get fit”, why not reframe this as “I will start to get fit by doing 30 minutes of exercise every day in January”. Breaking a goal down can stop it from feeling overwhelming, and you can adjust the steps as you progress. Remember – small steps add up to big changes!

  • Track your progress – this can really help you to stay committed to your goal by giving you something to celebrate each day. For example, fitness trackers can be a great way of measuring your progress, or you could mark an “X” on the calendar for each day you successfully meet your target. If your enthusiasm starts to dip, looking back at how far you have come can really give you a boost.

  • Make your goals meaningful – we are more likely to reach a target, or build a good habit, if they align with our core values. So really think about why your goals are important to you. For example: “I want to get fit so that I can spend more time playing with my children”. It is easier to stay on track when we are working towards an end point which has personal meaning to us.

Happy New Year!
